In this blog, we explore the key green flags to look for in others - trust, respect, support, and communication - while also highlighting how we can embody these qualities ourselves.

What are green flags?

Within the online space and particularly on social media platforms there’s lots of talk and references made to the toxic ‘red flags’ in relationships. But what about the signs that tell you a relationship (personal or professional) is a healthy dynamic?

Green flags are positive indicators that show you’re in a healthy, supportive and growth orientated dynamic.

Why Green Flags Matter?

Green flags matter because they indicate healthy, supportive and respectful relationships. The people we surround ourselves with influence our mindset, emotional well being, even our personal growth and influence our life choices. Identifying green flags in others, highlights the relationships that uplift, support and inspire us!

As a parent to a 12-year-old son, I believe it’s just as important to teach our kids about green flags in their own relationships. You can teach your child(ren) to choose positive relationships and simultaneously encourage how to embody the kind of person that others can trust and rely on. By helping them to recognise and nurture relationships that embody green flags will help promote their self-confidence, self-esteem and emotional health. This knowledge of green flags is something they can carry with them for life and will help them make better life choices as they grow up and into adulthood.

Fostering green flag habits for both you and your child(ren) can lead to stronger, more fulfilling connections in every area of life. Because at the end of the day, the quality of our relationships directly impacts the quality of our lives!

Here are some key Reasons why ‘Green Flags’ matter:

Promotes Emotional Safety - you will feel emotional stability and more comfortable in the presence of a person or an environment that fosters trust, respect and open communication.

Consistency and Reliability - demonstrates emotional maturity and accountability which can lead to more stable and fulfilling interactions.

Alignment of Values - if someone shares the same or similar principles, it helps make relationships more harmonious and reduces conflict.

Prevention of Toxicity - it helps adults and children focus on positive connections with others, instead of staying in unhealthy situations.

5 Green Flags in Any Relationship

#1 Open and Honest Communication - a great relationship thrives on honesty. Whether it’s a business partner keeping you in the loop or a friend who shares openly, or a child feeling safe to express their emotions. Transparency is key! Ask yourself and your kids: Do I communicate clearly and truthfully?

#2 Mutual Support - ever had someone hype you up without hesitation? That’s a green flag! The best connections are with those who celebrate your wins and support you through challenges. Ask yourself; are we doing the same for others? Do you encourage your child to be the kind of friend who lifts others up rather than competes or criticises?

#3 Respect for Boundaries - a healthy relationship acknowledges personal space, time and limits. This means choosing friends who understand when you need a break - but also being the friend who respects when others do, too. Teach kids that true friendships isn’t about control or pressure; it’s about support and freedom of choice.

#4 Growth Mindset - the best relationships encourage learning and self-improvement. Whether it’s a business partner pushing you toward success or a friend inspiring you to try something new, surrounding ourselves with positive influences makes all the difference. Ask yourself and your child: Am I encouraging those around me to learn and grow, or am I holding them back in some way?

#5 Conflict Resolution, Not Avoidance - disagreements happen, and perhaps more common for our children as they navigate new social situations. The key is how they’re handled. A green flag friend will talk things out, apologise when needed and work through issues respectfully - rather than ghosting, gossiping or resorting to drama. You can be the role model to your children and teach healthy ways to handle conflict, showing that respect matters even in disagreements.

Helping Kids to Recognise and Embody Green Flags

Ask Reflective Questions - “Which of your friends makes you feel good and happy in yourself?” and “Do you think you’re that kind of friend to others?”

Model Green Flag Behaviour - kids learn by watching how we interact with others, so be the role model by exhibiting green flag behaviours.

Praise Healthy Choices - when your child sets boundaries, supports a friend, or chooses kindness, acknowledge it!

Your Green Flag Check in!

Think about the key relationships in your life. Which ones show these green flags? Who feels good to be around? Who do you feel emotionally safe with? Who inspires you to be a better version of yourself? If you spot them, take a moment to appreciate those people!

This topic is close to my heart, as I struggled for years to understand relationship dynamics and why some people left me feeling great while others made me question myself and feeling low. Identifying red and green flags and understanding the characteristics behind them has been a valuable guide in helping me navigate relationship dynamics. It has given me clarity on what makes a relationship healthy and fulfilling.

Over time, I realised that recognising red flags is important, but actively focusing on green flags is even more powerful. Prioritising kindness, respect and emotional intelligence not only helped me build stronger, healthier relationships but also shifted my mindset from fear to appreciation. By embracing the positive qualities in others, I’ve been able to foster deeper connections and create a more fulfilling life. I feel by passing this knowledge on to our children is an invaluable gift, helping them build strong foundations for better life choices and healthier relationships.

With love

Kiki x

Shift your frequency with gratitude and journaling.
